ACWA is pleased to launch a new Practitioner Toolkit designed to help caseworkers, team leaders and case managers strengthen their support for foster and relative/kinship carers.
The toolkit draws on insights from ACWA’s Carer Survey, which gathered the views and experiences of 858 foster, relative and kinship carers from across New South Wales. Carers shared valuable feedback about what helps them feel supported, informed and valued, as well as areas where improvements could strengthen outcomes for both carers and children.
At the heart of the toolkit is a clear message from carers:

Developed with input from carers, practitioners and non-government service providers, the toolkit contains nine practical factsheets covering key areas of practice:
- What prospective carers need to know
- What new carers need to know
- Sharing information about a child
- Supporting carers with trauma-responsive parenting
- Building authentic relationships with carers
- Supporting carers to work with families
- Options for respite
- Supporting relative and kinship carers
- Supporting carers through the end of a placement
The toolkit is designed to provide practical, evidence-informed guidance that practitioners can apply in their day-to-day work. It recognises the critical role carers play in providing safe, stable and nurturing homes for children and young people, and the equally important role practitioners play in supporting carers to succeed.
ACWA will be showcasing each factsheet individually, highlighting key insights, practical strategies and reflections from carers to support continuous improvement in practice across the sector.
We thank the 858 carers who shared their experiences through the survey, and the sector partners who contributed their expertise to the development of this resource.
Together, by listening to carers and strengthening support around them, we can improve outcomes for children and young people in care.
