AbSec, ACWA and Fostering NSW are hosting the special event, ‘Safe: On Country and In Culture‘, on June 9 to continue the conversation about the over-representation of Aboriginal children in out-of-home care, and explore ideas for raising awareness about the need for Aboriginal kinship and foster carers to care for Aboriginal kids at times when they cannot live at home.
The program will include a special screening of the short documentary film ‘For the Kids’, which was recently screened as part of the Human Rights Arts and Film Festival and is about Aboriginal foster carer couple Rosie and Eddie Vale and their involvement in the Kids in Care Cup.
There will also be a facilitated ‘yarning circle’ where attendees can share stories and explore ideas with foster carers, young people who have been in the out-of-home care system, advocates, policy makers, community leaders and special guests from the Arts and Sports worlds.
Marcia Ella-Duncan OAM, the first Aboriginal woman to represent Australia in netball, will MC the day.
NGO staff and carers are warmly invited along to what promises to be a exciting event.
