Transitioning from OOHC: Professional Development Workshops With Iain Matheson

August's Homestretch Symposium in Sydney highlighted the critical importance of transitioning from out-of-home care (OOHC) across both Australia and New Zealand, and the need for us all, whatever our roles and involvement, to strive for better outcomes.

Being offered in Sydney, Melbourne and Auckland, these two one-day professional development workshops span transition preparation, extended care, relationship-based support, and accommodation. They will distill the latest international evidence down to a selection of the most relevant and actionable strategies, frameworks and tools available.

The practitioner workshop is specifically designed for those working with young people who are, or will be, transitioning from OOHC, including social workers, advisors and residential workers, while the other workshop is appropriate for managers who hold transitioning from care and/or out-of-home care responsibilities, as well as staff in management-related functions.

These workshops are facilitated by Dr Iain Matheson, who started his career as a ‘resi’ worker in Scotland, before going on to hold the New Zealand government’s national leadership role for residential and foster care. Iain is a leading researcher and consultant on OOHC, transitioning from care, and social sector services and programs. His research and consultancy experience includes being an advisor on the development of Australia's National Standards on Out-of-Home Care, and his research has been cited by the NSW Parliament’s Inquiry into Child Protection. Iain is Director of the New Zealand-based Research Centre for Better Outcomes from Fostering and Residential Care (Better Outcomes).
